Keeping mom safe without interfering with her independence.

Life changes, and with it, our needs evolve. For many of us, ensuring our parents or loved ones can continue to live independently and safely in their own homes is a top priority. My own experience with my mother, beautifully illustrates how modern technology, specifically an Alexa device, can be a wonderful partner in maintaining that cherished independence.

After my parents downsized, my father sadly passed away shortly thereafter. This left my mother in a new environment all on her own. While I was now only 30 minutes away from her new home if needed, I still wanted to ensure her comfort and safety during this period of adjustment. That's when I thought of Alexa.

I decided to give my mother an Alexa device, specifically an Amazon Echo Show 15. My primary thought was to use its ability to display family photos as a slideshow. With our extended family who are spread from Ottawa to Nova Scotia, having a central place where we could all easily share new pictures for her to enjoy, without her needing to navigate complex computer programs, was incredibly important. It brought a piece of our distant family right into her living room.

Beyond the visual connection, I introduced her to Alexa's musical capabilities. She quickly learned how to ask Alexa to play her favorite tunes, providing a pleasant soundtrack to her daily routines around the house. I wrote down simple instructions on how to speak to the device in case she forgot, and she found the learning curve surprisingly quick.

While the Amazon Echo Show 15 offers many features, I started slow, allowing my mother to become comfortable with the technology at her own pace. One of the most significant benefits we discovered was its ability to facilitate effortless communication.

I programmed the device so that when we make video calls, it answers automatically. This thoughtful feature means my mother doesn't have to worry about remembering verbal commands to answer these calls, eliminating any potential stress and ensuring we can connect easily. She can also initiate cell phone or video calls anytime she wishes, simply by speaking a command, all without needing to find her phone or even leave her comfortable chair.

The built-in camera also offers peace of mind. During family video chats, we can not only have wonderful conversations but also observe if everything appears well, offering a subtle yet reassuring check-in for the whole family.

Once my mother felt confident with these initial features, I gradually introduced more smart home integrations, further enhancing her daily life.

Appointment Reminders: I linked a Google Calendar to her Alexa device. Now, she receives gentle reminders about upcoming appointments. These can be added by her through voice commands or by family members who have access to her calendar. I set a daily morning reminder, a time when she's usually settled in the living room after breakfast, where the device automatically reads out her appointments for that day and the following day.

Comfort at Her Command: Next, I integrated a smart thermostat. While she can still adjust the temperature manually, she now has the option to simply ask Alexa to change it from her armchair. Whether she feels a chill, thinks the house is too warm, or just wants to know the current temperature, Alexa responds instantly, adding a layer of convenience and comfort.

Enhanced Bathroom Safety: Updates were done to the home to reduce fall risks like a walk-in tub, however, a lingering concern was what would happen if she fell in the washroom. As she is alone at home, there is no one there to hear her cries for help. As the Alexa device is in the living room, I worried that if the bathroom door was closed, it could potentially muffle her calls for help. The solution, I installed a smart speaker in the bathroom! Now, she can enjoy music during her bath, adjust the house temperature, and, crucially, call for assistance if an emergency arises. This small addition provides immense reassurance for everyone.

The possibilities for using smart technology to support independent living are truly expansive. My plans for my mother's home continue to evolve:

•       Smart Lighting for convenience: I intend to convert some of her light switches to smart ones, allowing my mother to control them verbally. Alexa can also be programmed to turn lights on and off automatically at a certain time and can also dim or brighten lights and so much more. Exterior lights can also be automated by setting a timer, enhancing security and visibility.

•       Motion sensors for safety: By adding motion sensors in different areas, lights can illuminate if she wakes at night, helping to prevent falls.

•       Remote Access for Emergencies: A smart door lock for the entrance is also on the horizon. In an emergency, if my mother calls for help, I can alert paramedics and remotely unlock the door for them. This ensures they can gain immediate access, potentially saving critical time before I can arrive.

•       And there is so much more!

My personal journey with my mother and Alexa has not only brought peace of mind to my family but has also resonated deeply with my professional life. As a Real Estate Broker, I frequently encounter clients and their families grappling with similar concerns about aging in place, maintaining independence, and ensuring safety within their homes. I've seen firsthand how these considerations play a crucial role in housing decisions and family discussions. Sharing these insights and solutions, born from real-life experience, is something I'm passionate about.

It's important to remember that these smart devices aren't exclusively for seniors; they are tools for everyone. However, with thoughtful planning and programming, they can transform a loved one's home into a safer, more comfortable, and more connected environment. This allows seniors to maintain their cherished independence and gives families invaluable peace of mind.

Technology, when applied with care and consideration, truly becomes a partner in empowering our seniors to live full, independent lives. It's not about watching over them in a restrictive way but about enabling them to thrive with confidence and security.
